Although no longer living in Belvedere, Michael T. Jackson has lent his support to the SFAI for a number of years. The organization is currently gearing up to host the Original Disruptor Gala in April of 2017.

The Disruptor Gala presents twelve alumni artists with the opportunity to create temporary bars and lounges. The aim is to create a number of visually striking sites, with the focus being placed on delivering the unexpected, in commemoration of the ground-breaking artists that have emerged from the SFAI’s Chestnut Street campus in Russian Hill, such as Ansel Adams, Barry McGee, and Joan Brown.

The event is the premier fundraiser in the SFAI calendar, with all proceeds going toward student scholarships. The evening itself will be a celebration of the spirit of the organization, and of those who have graduated from SFAI in the past. Discover more about the Disruptor Gala by visiting www.sfai.edu.

Michael T. Jackson, founder of SFG Asset Advisors in San Francisco, moved from Belvedere to Florida, where he currently resides. Born in England, Michael T. Jackson grew up in Ireland before establishing an active presence in Belvedere. Aside from work, he busies himself with travel and has visited several countries, including Morocco.

The best time to travel to Morocco is from May to September, its off-season, although prices remain high on the coast due to domestic tourism. The most popular time to visit is from November to March, but prices are highest during this time.

Getting around Morocco is affordable and can be done by train, car, bus, or taxi. The train, which has frequent departures between major cities, is the most accessible option. In destinations not serviced by trains, travelers can take the bus, which is cheaper, although slower.

Here are some other considerations for first-time visitors to Morocco to keep in mind:

• Most shops and museums are closed Friday, which is considered a holy day.
• Travelers are advised to bring bottled drinking water.
• When giving tips at restaurants, it is customary to give $1 per person at local places and around $3 to $5 per person at more upscale places.
• Avoid displaying the soles of the feet, which are perceived as unclean in Arab culture. Likewise, shoes must be taken off when invited into someone’s house.
• When visiting mosques, women should bring a shawl or a scarf to cover their head.

Another recent Fledgling Fund grant-funded movie, Death by Design examines the hidden costs associated with consumer devices, both in terms of environmental degradation and in the lives of factory workers in countries such as China.

Barely visited before a railway was constructed to Bulawayo in 1905, Victoria Falls has since been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 1990, it has attracted approximately 300,000 people annually, and over the next decade, this figure is expected to increase.

Exposure and Light Can Make or Break a Photo

A former resident of Belvedere, California, Michael T. Jackson currently lives in Florida. An alumnus of the University of Virginia, he studied for his MBA in finance at the University of Southern California. Michael T. Jackson enjoys photography in his leisure time.

Cameras come with an abundance of buttons that a beginner may find overwhelming. Exposure is a critical part of taking clear photos. Newer camera models should have a button that controls exposure. It’s crucial that such a button be pushed if your camera has it. Try not to rely on a camera’s automatic mode too much, as it typically fails to yield the hoped for results. Cameras may seem intimidating, but once they are figured out, experiencing captivating photos will be worth it.

Perfect lighting is key to taking a professional-looking photo. Most photographers take their photos during the golden hour, the hour that is right before sunset. During that hour, there is usually just the right amount of shadows to create the perfect contrast, which dramatically improves photos.

The goal of the Lab is to provide support for documentary filmmakers who want to increase their audience engagement level and create larger social impact through their projects. Focused on working with a small number of film teams, the Lab supports each project and brings in experts to help filmmakers create better strategies for reaching and engaging their desired audience.

First launched in 2014, the Fledgling Engagement Lab was financially supported by the Dobkin Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation. It works with documentary film projects that are still in their early stages and are backed by committed and collaborative film teams. Each team participates in the Lab through a combination of online and in-person meetings and focused residencies.
